From Years 7 – 10, students are provided with the fundamentals of literacy, reading and writing skills. English teachers across each year cater for all levels of abilities and interest.

Year 7 students of lower literacy skills are supported with a small group English class, English Plus. Parallel units of English are taught, with an emphasis on building basic literacy and language skills.
Each year level complete the following units of work:
  • Novel study
  • Film Study
  • Creative, Critical and Analytical Writing
  • Public Speaking

Each year students are encouraged to participate in two public speaking competitions; the St James College public speaking competition and the Lasallian public speaking competition.
Students in Years 9 and 10 are introduced to VCE English, Language and Literature studies.

In addition to English studies, Year 9 students are given the opportunity to study elective subjects, Literature and English Boost. Literature is an extension course designed for students with a passion for reading. English Boost provides a follow up on students struggling with literacy and writing skills.

In Year 10, students experience elements of VCE English Units, preparing them for transition to VCE English, Literature and Language:
  • Analytical and comparative writing
  • Creative response to texts
  • Language analysis

Students also have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities:
  • Golden Pen Writing Club
  • Write a Book in a Day
  • DAV and SIS Debating
  • SIS Public speaking competition
