St James College Celebrates the Feast Day of its Patron Saint

We were very pleased to have several De la Salle Brothers join us as special guests at our annual St James Day Mass on Monday 24th July. Brother Joseph Gabel (Principal 1985-1986) represented the Mentone Community whilst Brothers Lawrence King and Brother Michael Carroll, representing the Malvern community, were accompanied by a special visitor from New South Wales, Brother Michael McCabe (Principal 1987-1988).

The entire college community gathered in St Peter’s Church on a sunny Melbourne winter’s day to celebrate the feast of our patron, St James the Apostle. Fr Michael Sierakowski concelebrated the liturgy alongside Fr Sand, a recent arrival to Holy Trinity Parish and Fr Jacob who visited us from St Andrew’s Parish. This occasion was also a celebration of the academic achievements of many of our young men during Semester One.

We were treated to two Gospel readings as part of our celebration. Fr Sand, a recent arrival to Australia from Iraq, presented to us in Matthew’s Gospel, the account of the Parables of the Mustard Seed and The Yeast in his home language of Aramaic. It was indeed a rare privilege to hear this Gospel in this beautiful language that was so familiar to Jesus and his followers over two thousand years ago. Father Michael also shared the same Gospel reading for us in English

As part of the Mass, St James College Principal, Mr Stephen Pooley spoke to us of the life of the apostle St James and he reminded us of the many ways in which we can actively live out our faith. Mr Pooley encouraged all of us to use the special gifts given to us by God as a service to others by recalling the words of St James, “faith without good works is dead”. He then challenged all present to be companions to each other and to emulate the commitment that St James demonstrated in the living of his life.

Our special Mass concluded with the presentation of awards for Year Level Duces, Academic Achievement and Academic Effort. The prestigious St James Award was also presented to one student for each year level of the College.

Following the liturgy, we gathered with families in the foyer of the VPAC Building for a light lunch and the chance to celebrate the achievements of the young men recognised during the celebration.
