I Can

This Week our Group of St James’ Finest engaged in some Awesome activities. Five students went to the I CAN Camp a few weeks ago and they reported back on the activities that they participated in. Some of them have now forged new friendships with others they met on Camp. There is another camp in September, and many members of the group are already looking forward to it.

As this is the second year that the I CAN Program has been at St James, the ‘Second Year’ students are showing great enthusiasm and leadership skills and are contributing to the running of parts of the session; as Trainee Mentors. There is now a session called ‘Breakouts’, where the “First Years” are spending time focusing on developing their Conversation Skills and the “Second Years” are preparing for Mock Interviews; all very important skills in the development of our young men.

Again, the highlight was the “Team Activity”. This time based on construction and the group being able to drop a raw egg, from shoulder height, and avoid any cracks and spills. We have some very talented “scientists’ and with the support of their very ingenious constructions, not one cracked egg!

St James College featured in The Age the article was exploring our work with the I CAN program and the St James’ Finest group. If you missed the paper, you can catch up online http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/bringing-the-outsiders-in-autistic-pride-20170615-gwrpx2.html
