Feast of St John Baptist De La Salle

On Monday 15 May, the St James College community gathered in St Peter’s Church to celebrate the feast day of St John Baptist De La Salle who, as well as being the founder of the De La Salle Brothers, is also recognised as the patron saint of teachers. Our Founders Day Mass was celebrated by Father Michael Sierakowski from Holy Trinity Parish.

We were very fortunate to welcome as a special guest, Brother Joseph Gabel fsc, representing the Mentone De La Salle Brother’s Community.

In his homily, Father Michael reminded us of the life of De La Salle who not only saw the educational plight of the poor, but also responded to it. Putting this extraordinary life in the context of the Gospel, Father Michael challenged us to live a life like De la Salle in order to better understand the answer that Jesus provides to the question put by Thomas in John’s Gospel,

“Thomas asked, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” (Jn14:5-7)

Following Father Michael’s homily, St James College Principal, Mr Stephen Pooley spoke of his pilgrimage to France last year, when he was fortunate enough to be able to “walk in the footsteps” of the Founder. Mr Pooley reminded us that on Founders Day, Lasallian Schools from all around the world. would be commemorating the life of St John Baptist de La Salle in a similar fashion to our own mass.

At the conclusion of the Founder’s Day Mass the four the newly elected Year 7 SRC representatives were presented with their badges. Congratulations to Lewis Desmond, Tim Mallidis, Dylan Kotsinadelis and Hayden Donald.

Before Father Michael left the altar accompanied by the “Hymn To The Founder”, staff member Justin Shepherd was recognised for his ten years of service to St James College.

On the following afternoon, the St James Social Justice Group, the St Yon Crew (Years 7-9) hosted a very enjoyable Founder Day BBQ with lots of sizzling sausages!

It all added up to a very memorable Founder’s Day celebration.

Live Jesus In Our Hearts Forever.
