Junior Production

Our Year 7 and 8 Production for 2018 was performed to two sell-out audiences with a preview performance given to the Year 7 students.

For this production we chose David Ian Neville’s adaptation of Joan Lingard’s ‘Across the Barricades’ – a story that follows Kevin (a Catholic) and Sadie (a Protestant) as their relationship grows during a time in Northern Ireland’s history when such a match was a social impossibility. It is also a story that reminds us of ‘The Troubles’, a time when the Loyalist and the IRA spread intolerance and terror through the United Kingdom and challenges us to seek peace through dialogue in a modern society.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff involved for not just their time commitment but also their genuine support of the students involved: To Mr David Kirkles for creating a set that put us in Belfast, Ms Christine Blake for her graphics and marketing material, Ms Kate Brierty for her photography, Ms Dee O’Neill for supervising hair and make-up as well as coaching the students with the Irish accents and finally to Ms Rachel Urquhart for managing the production and running backstage. I would also like to thank the parents for supporting us and making sure the students were in attendance at rehearsals, had their theatre blacks and for being at the performances.

Finally, I am truly thankful to have been able to work with this group of emerging actors in bringing an important and relevant message to life. Their engagement with the narrative and their characters has been a journey of growth with moments of remarkable mindfulness and I thank them for being willing to take part in this adventure with such positive commitment and maturity.
